How Do You Make Matcha?
Conveniently, the only tool you need to properly make matcha is a bamboo tea whisk like this one, known as a chasen in Japan. Unlike a traditional metal whisk that you'd use to whip up eggs, for example, a chasen is carved out of a single piece of bamboo, with delicate tines for frothing up tea.
Traditional matcha is made with nothing but hot water and matcha powder, which is whisked with a brisk-yet-delicate motion, until the tea is absorbed into the water, resulting in a frothy drink. Note: This whisking in and of itself is also ridiculously calming these days!
FAQ
Can I use a matcha whisk on milk?
A. If you're making a matcha latte, it's recommended that you first prepare the matcha powder with hot water using a bamboo whisk. Use less water than you would for a full cup of tea. Separately, foam your desired milk (you can use an electric whisk for this), then pour the heated milk into the already prepared tea.
How do I clean a bamboo matcha whisk?
A. First off, never clean it with soap or run it through the dishwasher, as this will damage the whisk. Instead, place the strings under a stream of hot water or pour hot water in a clean matcha bowl and whisk until the strings are clean. Air dry the whisk before storing it.
